Community in Christ Lutheran worships in new sanctuary

CORNELIUS - Community in Christ Lutheran Church will hold its first worship service in a new sanctuary on Palm Sunday, April 13.

The church outgrew its 150-seat sanctuary, and the new 300-seat space will give the congregation room to grow. Pastor Travis Norton will lead the congregation in a Palm Sunday procession from the old sanctuary to the new.

“We will give thanks for those who built the sanctuary we worshiped in for so many years and celebrate the gift of a new space as we look forward to what God will accomplish through this growing congregation,” Norton said.

The sanctuary features a stained glass cross designed by local artist Elizabeth Moore and constructed by Statesville Stained Glass. The narthex is four times as large as the current one which Norton says “will encourage people to hang out after worship.”

The new building also features a cry room and nursery for the younger kids.

“Our hope is that this new sanctuary will serve the people of Lake Norman for generations to come,” Norton said,

Community in Christ is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran church in America. The church has a contemporary worship service at 9:30 a.m. and a traditional worship service at 11 a.m.

The church will hold an official dedication service at 9:30 and 11 a.m. May 4, and Bishop Leonard Bolick will preach. That evening there will be an open house for the community 6-7 p.m. Afterwards, a community choir will host a celebration event at 7 p.m.

Community in Christ is located at 7621 Norman Island Drive.
