MOORESVILLE – Students at Pine Lake Preparatory School will see their campus expand by two buildings before the start of the next school year. With help from families and local businesses, the school has raised the $1 million needed to break ground on a new Athletic and Community Center and a Fine Arts building.

The school held a groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 15 at the future site of the gym. More than 200 from the Pine Lake Prep community gathered to see the ceremonial dirt tossed in the air.

It took five years of pledges and donations from families, matching gifts from businesses, large-scale fundraisers such as the Annual Fund and annual golf tournament, and small-scale efforts such as and student-hosted lemonade stands, to get to the $1 million goal, and the Pine Lake community is eager to see the buildings raised, and to play their first “home” games at home.

G.L. Wilson Building Company, based in Statesville, will construct both new buildings. The athletic center will include a full-size gymnasium with bleacher seating for 1,000 people, a fitness room, multipurpose room, concessions area, locker rooms, storage and office space. The estimated cost for this building is $2.25 million and construction is expected to be complete August 2013, in time to start the 2013 school year. Regions Bank is providing the construction loan for the projects.

The Fine Arts Pavilion will include performance space and classroom space for drama, band, chorus and art. This structure will free up space in all three buildings. The total construction cost of this building is $1-1.2 million, and the building is expected to be completed July 2013.
