Construction of a new interchange where Catawba Avenue meets Interstate 77 in Cornelius can start as early as Oct. 28, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The NCDOT awarded a $5.4 million contract to Blythe Construction to build a diverging diamond interchange, designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and crashes when traffic backs up on ramps.

The diverging diamond allows traffic moving in two directions to temporarily cross the left side of the road. It also allows for free flowing turns when exiting or entering the interstate.

Construction is scheduled to be completed Nov. 1, 2014.
