HUNTERSVILLE – A Mount Holly woman died and two other people were injured when one car hit another Oct. 29 around 10 a.m. on N.C. 73 near the entrance to Blythe Landing Park.

According to Deputy Chief Michael Kee with the Huntersville Police Department, a black Nissan Altima driven by Brian Scott Atkins, of Huntersville, smashed into a white Toyota Corolla driven by Trina Osborne, of Charlotte, who was attempting to merge into a left turn lane to drive into the park.

Kee said various eyewitnesses reported that Atkins was moving westbound on N.C. 73 at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred. A passenger in his car identified by police as Nicole Wright, of Mount Holly, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both cars careened into a nearby utility pole, which remained standing. A door had to be removed from Atkins’ car to release him, Kee said. Both Osborne and Atkins suffered from serious injuries and were transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The Huntersville Police Department Traffic Safety Section is investigating the collision. Criminal charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation, Kee said.
