Howard Charles Hillman Sr.

HUNTERSVILLE – Howard Charles Hillman Sr., died Nov. 12, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

He was born March 25, 1924, in Gaston County, to the late Herbert and Alma Trull Hillman.

He was preceded in death by his son, Sidney Hillman; and grandsons, William Hillman and Josh Hillman.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Smith Hillman; sons, H.C. Hillman Jr. and wife Mary, Wayne Hillman and Joan Smith, Mike Hillman and wife Susie of Huntersville and Deryle Hillman and wife, Melinda; daughters, Karen and husband L.H. Gladden Jr. and Roxana and husband Dennis Huffman; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 16 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

Bruce Barnett

HUNTERSVILLE – Bruce Barnett, 63, died Nov. 11, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

He was born Oct. 13, 1950, in Nassau County, N.Y., to the late Harold and Ruth Barnett.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnne Barnett of Huntersville; sons, Nicholas Patrick and Dave Bruce and wife, Julie; brother, Ronald and wife, Barbara; brother-in-laws, Joseph and Patrick Demasco; and four grandchildren.

Dianne Pellegrino Riker

HUNTERSVILLE – Dianne Pellegrino Riker, 61, died Nov. 11, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

He was born March 29, 1952, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., to the late Dominic and Mary Pellegrino.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond; daughters, Dena-Marie Riker of Huntersville and Kimberly Bergmann and husband Joseph, all of Huntersville; sister, Nancy; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 15 at St. Mark Catholic Church.

Betsy Evans Dorton

HUNTERSVILLE – Betsy Evans Dorton, 81, died Nov. 9, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

She was born May 12, 1932, in Bladenboro, to the late Clyde and Fannie Evans.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Riley and Charles Evans.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Spurgeon Dorton; sons, David and wife Laura and Mark Dorton; daughters, Martha Mays and husband Jeff and Beth Fields and husband Michael; sisters, Doris Danella, Margaret Pigford and Nancy Watson; brothers, Jasper, Johnnie, Alva and Edgar Evans; and five grandchildren.

Oliver Lloyd Johnston

HUNTERSVILLE – Oliver Lloyd Johnston, 89, died Nov. 8, 2013, at his home.

He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Mecklenburg County, to the late Lloyd Wilson and Bessie Head Johnston.

Johnston was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Pneumafil Corp after 35 years of employment.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lovejoy Cromer.

Survivors include his son, Oliver Lloyd Johnston Jr. and wife, Dianne of Huntersville; daughters, Gwendolyn Ann Howard and Linda Carol Johnston, both of Huntersville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Sewell Helvey

DAVIDSON – Mary Sewell Helvey, 95, died Nov. 7, 2013.

She was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Keystone, W.Va., to the late Sallie Buchanan Helvey and Kenerly Frazier Helvey,

Helvey was a teacher for McDowell County, West Virginia schools and worked in the libraries at Concord College and Davidson College.

Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Helvey Lyon.

Memorial services were held Nov. 10 at the Pines at Davidson.
