Paul Jessie Merritt Sr.  

HUNTERSVILLE – Paul Jessie Merritt Sr., 88, died Dec. 9, 2013, at Huntersville Oaks.

He was born June 13, 1925, in Alma, Ga., to the late Jessie and Esther Talbert Merritt.

Merritt was a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from WA Buening Engravers after 20 years of service and opened Merritt Graphics Company.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Merritt; and sister, Evelyn Hinson.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lenora Puckett Merritt; son, Paul Merritt Jr. and wife Phyllis; brothers, Manuel and Jim and wife Norrie; sister, Myrleen Page; sister-in-law, Peggy Puckett Marshall and husband Jack; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Trinity United Methodist Church.

James Utley Davis

HUNTERSVILLE – James “Jim” Utley Davis, 94, died Dec. 7, 2013, at The Haven in Highland Creek.

He was the son of the late Arthur Alander Davis and Blandena Utley Davis.

Davis was a U.S. Army veteran and farmed the family property on Hucks Road in the Croft community, now part of the Clarks Creek Nature Preserve. He was on the board of directors for the Mecklenburg County Farm Bureau for many years, serving for a few years as president.

He was preceded in death his wife, Rosa Hucks Davis; brothers, David, Oran, Earl, Thomas and Alfred Davis; and sisters, Agnes Knox and Polly Earnhardt.

Survivors include his daughter, Janette Coyle and husband Tom; son, Gerald Davis and wife Mary Beth; brother, Whit Davis and wife Mary Neal; sister, Lottie Campbell; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Independence Hill Baptist Church.

Audrey Austin King  

HUNTERSVILLE – Audrey Austin King, 87, died Dec. 7, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center.

She was born on April 28, 1926, in Mecklenburg County, to the late John and Bertha Austin.

King worked as a receivables clerk for Belk Department Stores.

He was preceded in death by her husbands, Keith Kerley and Johnny King.

Survivors include her son, Jack Kerley and wife Rhonda; sister, Bobbie Thompson; brother, Bill Austin; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 10 at First Baptist Church in Huntersville.

Elizabeth Cunningham Roberts

DAVIDSON – Elizabeth Cunningham Roberts, 92, died Dec. 6, 2013, at The Pines in Davidson.

She was born June 6, 1921, in Williston, S.C., to the late Marguerite Harley and Walter Curry Cunningham.

Roberts worked as a research associate at the Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas before marriage.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; sister, Pamela Cunningham Gosnell; and brother, Williams Curry Cunningham.

Survivors include her daughters, Ann Smythers and husband Alex and Susan Colpitts and husband Norman; son, Jack Roberts; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at St. Therese Catholic Church.

Doris Evelyn Judson Cooke 

CORNELIUS – Doris Evelyn Judson Cooke, 94, died Dec. 2, 2013.

She was born July 20, 1919, in the Bronx, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Howard Cooke.

Survivors include her daughters, Bette Naglak and husband, George and Susan Kelley and husband, John; son, Richard and wife, Susan; sister, Muriel Grigg; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
