HUNTERSVILLE – The Peninsula Community Foundation has given The Bin, a Huntersville-based nonprofit, a check for $11,000 in matching funds.

The organization used the donation to buy a box truck to aid in its mission of receiving used furniture, household goods and appliances and redistributing them to needy families in north Mecklenburg and southern Iredell counties.

The Peninsula Community Foundation, started in 2002 by residents of The Peninsula neighborhood in Cornelius, has raised more than $850,000 for local charities, including Ada Jenkins Center, Lake Norman Free Clinic, Habitat for Humanity, Hope House and Hospice.

The foundation also provides need-based scholarships for up to 16 local college students each year.
