Galway Hooker, the authentic Irish pub in Cornelius, will host another St. Patrick’s Day extravaganza this year, while extending the event to two days, March 16 and 17.

“The Galway Hooker is like grandma,” said co-owner Chris Boukedes. “She’s a simple little woman. She’s going to always treat anyone that walks through the door like family and two or three times a year she explodes and goes crazy.”

Boukedes says what started out with a small 20-foot square tent has now grown to “five monster tents with 3,000 people over two days.”

The crowd will be entertained by at least five live bands a day, bagpipers and Irish dancers. There will be areas to play corn hole and beer pong, with TVs scattered throughout the event showing March Madness.

Named for Galway Bay, on the west coast of Ireland, this pub was built in Ireland, deconstructed and brought over piece-by-piece to its Kenton Place home. A Galway Hooker is a fishing boat commonly used in the bay, represented by the sails in the company’s logo.

This year, Galway Hooker will sell VIP tickets for $20 each day or $30 for both that will provide for an exclusive Irish buffet, a selection of beers that can only be bought at the VIP private bar, a T-shirt, Guinness collectable and a separated restroom.

Food trucks and street venders will be set up around the venue.

While there will be a $500 cash award for best dressed Irish costume, there will be other chances to win great prizes through a raffle benefitting Ace and TJ’s Grin Kids.

Grin Kids is a non-profit organization that charters a 737 jet every year and takes children who are terminally ill or chronically handicapped on an all-expense paid trip to Disney World with their entire family and health care workers.

For this year’s raffle, they already have a TV donated from Best Buy, Miller Lite and Guinness swag and a vacation as a part of the fundraising raffle.

It is a fun, safe, community party,” Boukedes said.  “This is not going to Charlotte and dealing with all that. It’s a good solid party that the community gets behind. Its not riff raff, its not craziness. Bring your chairs and come hang out the whole day.”
