CORNELIUS – A Cornelius-based company is providing a new way for people to shop and donate to charity.
The concept behind Gift Cards for a Cause is simple. You purchase gift cards for your everyday purchase, whether it’s for clothes, groceries or gifts. A percentage of the card amount is given directly to the charity of your choice.
“Gift Cards for a Cause is all about making the dollars you spend doing your routine shopping work to also support your favorite non-profit and charitable organizations,” said Stacy Baum, Gift Cards for a Cause’s executive director.
Any amount between one to 40 percent of the value of the card can be donated. That doesn’t mean you buy a $100 gift card and $40 of that card goes to charity. You get the full $100 and Gift Cards for a Cause donates the percentage to the charity.
Gift Cards for a Cause buys the gift cards in bulk and then gives 95 percent of their profit to charities.
Gift Cards for a Cause is not a non-profit. The five percent of funds kept, go to keep the doors open.
Donna M. Chrobak is the founder and chairman of Gift Cards For A Cause. Chrobak, who lives in Cornelius, came up with the idea while in Atlanta working as the executive director of a food bank.
She purchased gift cards at a discount for the food bank and wondered why she couldn’t do that somewhere else. The idea turned into Gift Cards for a Cause.
Baum started working for the company in September of 2012 after a life-changing fainting episode left her with a triple jaw fractures needing multiple surgeries, months of physical therapy, and extensive and ongoing dental work.
“Prior to my accident, I worked in recruiting and career development,” Baum said. “After the accident, I was looking for a way to help people give back.”
