Runners in the Kicks 4 Kids 5K race take off from the starting line April 20. The organization, founded by SouthLake Christian Academy sophomores Emily Wakeman and Ansley Rikard, held the race at Jetton Park in Cornelius. More than 120 runners participated, raising $8,000.
Chris Lamperski won the 5K with a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds. Money raised will go to providing a new pair of athletic shoes for each of the 103 students at Brookstone School, a private, nonprofit school serving low income children in kindergarten though sixth grade in west Charlotte.
Wakeman and Rikard also received 35 pairs of shoes donated by Run for Your Life and Charlotte Running Company. Money left over will be used to buy athletic equipment for Brookstone. The shoes and equipment will be presented to the students on May 30.
