MOORESVILLE – Bob Fields admits that he knew next to nothing about sailing five years ago.

“I didn’t know a thing about yacht racing the first time I tried it, but I really enjoyed it,” Fields said.

Fields, the regatta chair for the Lake Norman Yacht Club’s Flying Scot Great 48 race on May 4, picked up the hobby after joining the club. He and about 40 others raced their Flying Scot boats around the lake area in the two-day event, which is one of the Yacht Club’s premier attractions.

Windy, cool conditions didn’t dampen participants’ spirits.

“It’s always a good time when we’re all together,” Fields said.

The regatta is a regional event bringing owners of Flying Scot boats together to race, but competition is a small part of the spectacle.

He said the Lake Norman Yacht Club – a nonprofit group devoted to promoting sailing – serves as an ideal setting to hold events like the Great 48 because of the club’s social nature.

“Folks can camp out and sail and not have to worry about getting a hotel. You have people getting together with a common interest,” Fields said.

“It’s no different than golf or other sports like that. You meet friends you haven’t seen in a while. It’s great for a reunion.”

The club’s events don’t stop after the regatta, however. Nor are the events solely for seasoned sailors.

The club hosts its Discover Sailing weekend on May 25-26, an event designed to teach residents the basics of sailing on the lake.

Part of the club’s appeal, Commodore John Park said, is in the numerous community events the group holds.

“Anyone who is interested in sailing can come to the club and enjoy a day of sailing, plus learn about the sport and the club,” Park said of the Discover Sailing Event, adding that there are other events for local residents to enjoy.

“The Lake Norman Yacht Club hosts regional and national open events for sailors,” he said. "We held a Sunfish Laser regatta (in late April), and we are hosting (more regattas in the future).”

Upcoming is the club's Lake Norman Hospice Regatta May 31-June 2 at the club’s base off Yacht Road in Mooresville.

The three-day event includes an evening social and an auction.

“It’s one of our most popular events of the year,” Fields said. “We’ve had so much fun as a group it’s hard to better the events (every year).”

Fields said the Great 48 and some other races don’t usually attract many fans, but those that come don’t stay fans for long.

“If someone came out one year as a spectator,” he said, “I’m sure they’d want to be back the next year waiting to participate.”
