HUNTERSVILLE – Hopewell High named Matthew Jenkins, a 21-year veteran, as football coach Monday.

This is Jenkins’ third head coaching position. He was the defensive coordinator the past three years at Concord High, and held the same position at Myers Park High for one year.

Jenkins replaced David Johnson, who resigned two weeks ago after going 9-13 in two seasons and making the state playoffs both seasons.

Jenkins came to North Carolina from Las Vegas, where he was head coach at two schools. At Canyon Springs High, his teams won 24 games in three seasons, made the playoffs all three years and won the school’s first two playoff games.

Jenkins also spent six years coaching high school in southern Californa and at Penn Stae and Cornell universities.
