Thomas Leon Deaton

HUNTERSVILLE – Thomas Leon Deaton, 71, died June 8, 2013, at his home.

He was born July 3, 1941, to the late George Duke Deaton and Grace Brown Deaton.

Deaton was a U.S Air Force veteran. He worked for Overnight Transportation and retired after 34 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Mae Smoot; and niece, Donna Deaton McElwaine.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughters, Denise Gerber and husband, Kevin, Cheryl Beach, of Cornelius, Leslie Rogers and husband, Brett, Pam O’Neill and husband, Sean, and Claire Lundquist and husband, Don; brothers, Crawford Deaton and Carl Deaton of Davidson; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 11 at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church.

Joseph Glenn Abernethy Jr.

CONCORD– Joseph Glenn Abernethy Jr., 56, died June 7, 2013, at his home.

He was born Nov. 10, 1956, in Mecklenburg County, to the late Glenn and Mag Abernethy.

Abernethy graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in 1975 and Appalachian State University in 1979. He owned Abernethy Lumber in Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife, Patti Williams Abernethy; sons, Glenn III, Patrick, K.C. and Dylan; and siblings, Glenda Abernethy, Christy Nixon and husband, Reggie, and Lisa Poole.

Funeral services were held June 10 at James Funeral Home.

Sarah Hooker Blanchard Erickson

DAVIDSON – Sara Hooker Blanchard Erickson, 87, died June 5, 2013, at The Pines.

She was born July 5, 1925, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., to the late Ralph and Margaret Hooker Blanchard.

Sam I. Hanna 

HUNTERSVILLE – Sam I. Hanna, 63, died June 5, 2013. 

Hanna was a mechanical engineer for Volvo Trucks.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; daughter, Sandy and husband, Ehab Hennawi; sons, John and Joseph Hanna; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 8 in RoanokeVa.

Myrtle Newton Knox

MOORESVILLE – Myrtle Newton Knox, 78, died June 2, 2013, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 27, 1935, in Iredell County, to the late Robert James Newton and Alma Knight Newton.

Knox was a retired administrative assistant for Davidson College.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hollis Knox.

Survivors include her son, Joe Knox and wife, Robin; daughter, Jennie Brown; sister, Alma Wofford and husband, Luke; and five grandchildren.  

Funeral services were held June 5 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Emma Casso Tovar

MOORESVILLE – Emma Casso Tovar, 93, died June 2, 2013, at Levine Dickson Hospice House.

She was born Feb. 24, 1920, in El Paso, Texas, to the late Thomas Lopez Casso and Adela Solis Casso.

Tovar taught English as a second language for 14 years. She was a former realtor and flower shop owner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Toby Tovar Sr.; daughter, Yvonne McLaughlin; son, H. Toby Tovar Jr.; and nephew, Martin David Tovar.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Ruth Tovar and friend, Dino, of Cornelius; sons, Martin Wayne Tovar, Rick T. Tovar and wife, Pam; sister, Mary Lou Flores; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 12 in El PasoTexas.

Debora Laugel Hart

MOORESVILLE – Debora “Debbi” Laugel Hart, 61, died May 28, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 16, 1952, in Clifton, N.J., to Bernice Sovine Laugel and the late Louis Frank Laugel.

Hart was a former administrative assistant for Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her mother, Bernice Sovine Laugel; her husband, Gary David Hart; children, Adam Hart, Greg Hart and wife, Michelle, Emily Higgs and husband, Nathan, of Davidson; sister, Cindy Laugel; brother, Kenneth Laugel and wife, Michelle; and three grandsons.

Funeral services were held June 16, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
