CORNELIUS – Elected officials, weather forecasters and sports figures will be tending bar June 13 at Alton’s Kitchen & Cocktails during the Big Day at the Lake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Their tips will go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte.

The “Celebrity Bartenders” event starts at 5:30 p.m., with the mayors of Cornelius and Mooresville — Lynette Rinker and Miles Atkins — dueling for tips.

“Big Day at the Lake is all about supporting at-risk kids in BBBS, and the Celebrity Bartenders party and auction is a way to provide funds for the mentoring program that BBBS is all about,” said Dave Yochum, the founder of Big Day at the Lake.

Bartenders like Sen. Jeff Tarte, County Commissioner Karen Bentley and weather forecasters John Wendel and Vicki Graf will compete to see who can raise the most money in sales and gratuities during their 45 minutes behind the bar.

Each receives a “Mixologist Extraordinaire”certificate for their hard work.

Retired New Jersey Nets player Eric “Sleepy” Floyd and Colts placekicker Dean Biasucci will meet and greet guests.

Big Day at the Lake’s financial goal is $75,000 in cash for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

It costs roughly $1,000 a year to support each mentor of an at-risk child. There are some 250 children in BBBS in North Mecklenburg.

Big Day at the Lake has two other goals: Provide a day of fun on Lake Norman for kids in BBBS and recruit the “Bigs” or mentors for the children.

Over the past nine years, the Big Day at the Lake team has raised more than $500,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and served or supported literally thousands of “Littles.”
