Truex wins first race since 2007

CORNELIUS – Martin Truex Jr. dominated the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on June 23 en route to his first victory with Michael Waltrip Racing and the team’s first win of the season.

Truex had last won a race in June 2007 at Dover International Speedway, when he was a member of Dale Earnhardt Incorporated.

But a Sonoma win may not be all team owner Michael Waltrip gets to enjoy this season.

Both Truex and Bowyer are in position to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Bowyer ranks third in points standings and Truex is 10th after 16 races.

Labonte’s consecutive starts streak ends

HUNTERSVILLE – Bobby Labonte’s run of 704 consecutive Sprint Cup starts will end when the series races on June 29 at Kentucky Speedway.

Labonte, who won the 2000 Sprint Cup championship with Huntersville-based Joe Gibbs Racing, has spent the past three seasons with JTG-Daugherty Racing. He lost his full-time ride in the No. 47 Toyota when the team opted to use A.J. Allmendinger on a trial basis.

Labonte’s consecutive race streak was the second-longest among active Sprint Cup drivers, one race behind Jeff Gordon. Labonte confirmed the end of his streak in a June 25 chat with fans on JTG’s site.

Two-time Camping World Truck Series champion Todd Bodine will also be out of the action at Kentucky.

Bodine won’t be in a Truck Series race for the first time since 2004 after having his ThorSport Racing team replace him with Brett Moffitt for the June 27 Truck Series event.

Busch returns to Nationwide Series

HUNTERSVILLE – A one-week absence from the No. 54 Toyota was enough for Kyle Busch.

Busch, who has six Nationwide Series wins this year, will be back in his Joe Gibbs Racing car June 28 at Kentucky Speedway.

Owen Kelly drove the car at Road America while Busch raced in Sonoma, Calif.
