CORNELIUS – Karen Crilly told her husband Thomas her work as a pediatric therapist for Levine Children’s Hospital was a rewarding experience, but she wanted to try something new this year.
“I felt like I had everything,” she said. “I wanted to try something new and find a new way to help.”
Crilly chose to start her a clinic, Casa Care Pediatric Therapy, which opened in June. Crilly said the process she and Thomas went through in preparing to open the clinic was exciting, because of the novelty related to operating one.
Casa Care, she said, will be operated like a family, where children from newborns up to 12 years old can receive specialized physical care. The clinic includes programs that focus on the treatment of premature infants and children with chronic movement difficulties. One-on-one classes and wellness group classes are also available.
“My goal is to be a part of this community and help them,” Crilly said. “Casa Care is going to be something unique. I am bringing resources and equipment that children can use to help them learn and enhance their physical skills.
“Working at Levine, I saw a large amount of children whose needs required special services, and I realized that I needed to bring something unique. Children in our community need therapy. I think it’s an amazing opportunity.”
The clinic held its ribbon-cutting on July 10. Monthly workshops for parents began July 12.
Crilly said she’ll go up against larger clinics including Carolinas Medical Center in the quest to treat children, but she isn’t looking at it from a competitive standpoint.
“I think, because we’re offering specialized care for the children, we’re on a different level,” she said.
“I want to be able to not just have a clinic, but to have a place where a parent can come and say, ‘My child visited a clinic, but it's a family too.’ My patients are my family.”
Thomas Crilly said his wife has wanted to operate her own clinic for years.
“She’s wanted something of her own that she can use to give back to the community,” he said. “She can help people who really need help. She’s got a gift. Everyone who comes in contact with her, who uses her therapy, comes away appreciating it.”
