DAVIDSON – In addition to non-conference games with Duke, Virginia, North Carolina and 2013 Final Four participant Wichita State, Davidson’s 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule will include an appearance in the Charleston Classic, head coach Bob McKillop announced Aug. 13.
Eight teams advanced to postseason play a year ago, including three that finished with RPIs in the Top-20, according to the NCAA’s RPI ratings.
Fans will get their first chance to see the 2013-14 Wildcats in action Oct. 19, when Davidson holds its annual Red-Black game at 5 p.m.
The Wildcats will host Lenoir-Rhyne in their lone preseason contest Nov. 3, before opening the season at Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Nov. 8.
Three days later, Davidson will welcome Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Nov. 11) to Belk Arena, where the Wildcats have won 11 straight and 25 of their last 28.
On Nov. 16, the Wildcats will take on their second of three ACC opponents when they host the Virginia Cavaliers at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
For the second time in the tournament’s six-year existence, Davidson will take part in the Charleston Classic Nov. 21, 22 and 24. The Wildcats, who last participated in the event in 2008, will play Georgia on day one prior to battling Temple/Clemson on day two. Also competing in the annual event are UAB, New Mexico, UMass and Nebraska.
After heading to DeLand, Fla., for a Nov. 30 game against Stetson from the Atlantic Sun, Davidson will conclude its six-game swing away from home with the Hornets’ Nest Trophy game at cross-county rival Charlotte on Dec. 4.
The Wildcats will play their second local opponent in as many games when they welcome Johnson & Wales to town Dec. 7 before traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on 2013 MAAC Regular Season Champion Niagara on Dec. 11 at the First Niagara Center.
Just before exams, Davidson will conclude its 2013 home slate with a Sunday contest versus Drexel, who knocked off the Wildcats a year ago in Philadelphia.
Davidson will wrap up the month of December with road games against North Carolina (Dec. 21) and 2013 Final Four participant Wichita State (Dec. 29).
Following a New Year’s Day tilt against former league-rival College of Charleston at Belk, the Wildcats will begin their final season in the Southern Conference with a Jan. 4 game at Wofford.
The SoCon slate features two games (home-and-home) against The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNCG and Wofford and single contests against Western Carolina (away), Samford (away), Chattanooga (home) and Appalachian State (home).
For the third consecutive year, the Southern Conference Tournament will be played in Asheville. It will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center on March 7-10, with the champion earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Coming off back-to-back Southern Conference regular season titles, tournament crowns and NCAA Tournament appearances, Davidson returns 11 letterwinners from a 2012-13 squad that went 26-8 overall and 17-1 in league play.
