Community School of Davidson (1-2) vs. Morganton Patton (3-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at North Mecklenburg

Last meeting: This is the first meeting.

Players to watch: CSD – OL Holden Bailey, QB Garrett Hart, RB Monquez Moore; Patton – DB Collins Hamer, OL Jared Sain, QB Nick Conklin.

The skinny: Community School of Davidson is showing it can score, but the Spartans have allowed more than 30 points twice in three games. They will face a Patton team that thrives in close games, with victories this season by one, three and seven points. In each of the past two victories, Patton scored the winning touchdown with less than four minutes left. This is the second “home” game for CSD, which doesn’t have a stadium on campus.

Lake Norman Charter (3-0) at Gastonia Highland (0-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13

Last meeting: Lake Norman Charter won 52-7 last season.

Players to watch: LN Charter – PK J.C. Brooks, RB Kodi Moses, DB Jake Massey; Highland – RB Josh Crawford, WR Rollin Jenkins, LB Brendan Granson

The skinny: Lake Norman Charter has scored 20, 30 and 51 points this season. Highland has scored six in both its losses and is mired in a 24-game losing streak. Lake Norman Charter has quick-strike capabilities, evidenced by its 42-point first quarter last week. Moses has rushed for three touchdowns and four different Knights have caught scoring passes from quarterback Michael Dorsainvil.

Davidson Day (3-0) at Harrells Christian (3-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13

Last meeting: Davidson Day won 104-80 last season.

Players to watch: DD – QB Will Grier, WR Michael Stevens, RB Jordan Brown; Harrells  – RB Kelly Nelms, RB Marcus Scarborough, DE Patrick Walker

The skinny: This likely won’t be as high scoring as last season’s 184-pointer in the state semifinals, but you never know. Grier has 20 touchdown passes in three games, including six in a 46-20 win at Providence Day last week. The Patriots effectively can attack every quadrant of the field. Their defense is improved and confidence levels are high among the two-time defending state champions. Harrells is averaging 34 points per game, including last week’s 41-0 victory that was halted at halftime by bad weather.

Hopewell (1-2) vs. Olympic (1-1), at Waddell

Time: 7 p.m. Sept. 12

Last meeting: This is the first meeting.

Players to watch: Hopewell – QB Jerry Chadwick, WR Jonquez Williams, WR Dominique Heath; Olympic – DL Robert Dinkins, QB Rod Tinsley, WR Darius Means

The skinny: Hopewell has plenty of offensive talent and battled from a 34-6 deficit last week, before losing 51-41 to Mooresville. Chadwick is throwing well and the Titans have enough speed to score quickly. They must tighten a defense that has allowed 92 points the past two games. It won’t soon get any easier for Hopewell, which next has games against unbeatens Hough and Mallard Creek.

High Point Christian (2-1) at SouthLake Christian (3-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13

Last meeting: SouthLake Christian won 50-0 last season.

Players to watch: HPC – QB David Norris, RB Nate Degraffinreaidt; SouthLake – QB Luke Lancaster, PK Jeremy Silinski, WR Connor O’Donnell

The skinny: SouthLake’s offense is in high gear. Robert Washington Jr. has rushed for seven touchdowns the past two games. Last week, Lancaster ran for a touchdown and threw scoring passes to Riley Zayicek and O’Donnell. High Point Christian is averaging 38.7 points, but its strength of schedule hasn’t been as difficult as SouthLake Christian. The Eagles defense has played well in two straight games.
