Lake-area athletes behaved themselves on the field

CHAPEL HILL – Eight Lake Norman-area high schools were ejection-free during the 2012-13 school year and will receive an award from the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Hough High, North Mecklenburg, East Gaston, Lincoln Charter, North Lincoln, West Mecklenburg, Christ the King and Pine Lake Prep were among the 128 schools (of the NCHSAA’s 396 member schools) that didn’t have an athlete ejected for unsportsmanlike acts such as fighting, taunting, profanity, obscene gestures or disrespectfully addressing or contacting officials.

Each ejection-free school will receive a certificate of recognition at the NCHSAA regional meetings next month.

Davidson College stumbles in football season opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Host Georgetown University ruined Davidson College coach Paul Nichols’ debut by beating the Wildcats 42-6 in the football season opener Sept. 7.

Tight end Reese Williams eight passes for 62 yards and a touchdown to lead Davidson’s offense. Jonathan Carkhuff was 22-of-42 passing for 214 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Defensive back Myles Atkins led the defense with nine tackles (five solo) and an interception.

“As I told our guys in the locker room, our goal is unchanged, which is to win the Pioneer Football League championship,” Nichols said. “Everything we do in our program is geared toward that. This game was a big game because it was our first game and because it was our next game, but our goals for this season remain the same.”

Davidson will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 against Lenoir-Rhyne (0-1).
