Hough golfers playing well

CORNELIUS – Hough High leads the MECKA 4A conference girls’ golf standings after two league matches.

The Huskies’ average score of 253 is well ahead of runner-up Mallard Creek’s 291.

Hough’s Bailey Jones leads the conference with a scoring average of 40 (over nine holes), followed by teammate Renee Janis (42) and Tessa Young (42.5). Hough’s Natalie Cleveland (45.5) and Hopewell’s Reina Pozo are tied for sixth, and North Mecklenburg’s Alex Hull (46) is eighth.

The next conference tournament will be Sept. 23 at Irish Creek Club in Kannapolis.


Hough soccer in first place

CORNELIUS – The Hough High boys’ soccer team improved to 3-0 in the MECKA 4A conference with a 2-0 victory against Mallard Creek on Sept. 16.

The Huskies (6-4 overall) were led by Michael Basnett (goal and assist), Clay Kennedy (goal) and Jayson Howard (assist).Bryce Deeringer was in net for the shutout.

Mallard Creek (3-5) slipped to 1-2 in conference play.


LN Charter soccer coasts

HUNTERSVILLE – Christian Hall scored a hat trick to lead Lake Norman Charter to a 9-0 boys soccer victory against Cramer on Sept. 16.

Justin Gannaway, Parker Moss, Hunter Gregory, Woodson Brooks, Scott Pledger and Ryan McLaine also scored for the Knights, who improved to 4-4.

Goalkeepers Sam Sisson and Matt Miller split time in the shutout.


Davidson alum lands NBA management position

DAVIDSON - Former Davidson College basketball standout Brandon Williams was added to the Philadelphia 76ers’ front office and will serve as the general manager of the Delaware 87ers, Philadelphia’s affiliate in the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL).

Williams, an all-conference player, helped Davidson reach the National Invitational Tournament in 1994 and 1996. He played professionally for nearly a decade, including a championship with the San Antonio Spurs.

Williams most recently was the NBA’s associate vice president of basketball operations.
