DAVIDSON – A man who drowned in Davidson Cove on Lake Norman after jumping off the side of a boat late Saturday afternoon has been identified as 34-year-old Christian Helena, according to Sergeant Jeremy Harrill with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
Harrill said Helena was from New York and enjoying the long weekend with five friends on a 19-foot boat when he decided to jump off for a swim. A rope was tossed to him the first time to pull him back in, but he decided to jump again, Harrill said.
The second rope tossed by his friends slipped from their hands, and Helena disappeared below the water’s surface and never came up again, Harrill said. Witnesses admitted that everyone onboard had been intoxicated during the incident.
Helena drowned near the D-11 channel marker in southern Iredell County.
A woman out for an evening cruise around 7:30 p.m. discovered his floating body Sept. 2. Dive teams with sonar technology from several search and rescue crews had proved unsuccessful in their attempts to find Helena during the two previous days, Harrill said.
