DAVIDSON – Davidson Community Players has announced productions for its 2014 season.

Season tickets are available for $95 (adults), $78 (seniors) and $58 (students). Tickets for any three plays cost $63 (adults), $55 (seniors) and $31 (students).

Davidson Community Players is a nonprofit established in 1965 to produce theater that entertains, enriches and encourages community participation in the dramatic arts.

Flyin’ West

• Description: The women of “Flyin’ West” face problems such as cold winters, domestic violence and racial conflict. They include Miss Leah, the old woman whose memories of slavery and its aftermath comprise a living oral history; Sophie Washington, who is determined to protect her land and those she loves; and Fannie Mae Dove, the gentle sister trying to civilize the frontier with fine china and roses. This glimpse into American history serves as a reminder of the diversity of Western pioneers.

42nd Street
• Description: This is the story of hard work, being in the right place at the right time, talent and love. “42nd Street” focuses on aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer, her tap-dancing friends and rivals, and her journey to stardom. It’s one of the longest running shows on Broadway. Musical hits include “You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me, Dames,” “We're In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo.”

• Showtimes: 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, June 19-28, as well as 2 p.m. June 22 and 28, Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall, 207 Faculty Drive, Davidson.

Unnecessary Farce
• Description: Two cops. Three crooks. Eight doors. Ready, set, go. In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next-door, two earnest but bumbling undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there's some confusion as to who's in which room, who's being videotaped, who's taken the money, who's hired a hit man and why the accountant keeps disrobing.

• Showtimes: 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 17-27, in a location to be announced.

Dixie Swim Club
• Description: Five Southern women, whose friendships began on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every summer to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on the Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. As their lives unfold and the years pass, they increasingly rely on each other to get through the challenges that life flings at them.

It’s a Wonderful Life
• Description: Experience a live radio broadcast as this beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life. With the help of a small ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve and realizes the wide effect of his life.

• Showtimes: 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 4-21, at Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St., Davidson. Other showings will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 14, 2 p.m. Dec. 20 and 7 p.m. Dec. 21.

The Connie Company is Davidson Community Players’ youth division.

 

Cinderella
• Description: The right shoe can change your life. Shy and romantic Cinderella is made a servant in her own home but still has a positive outlook on life. When an invitation to the ball arrives, she dreams of attending in a beautiful dress.

• Showtimes: 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31; 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Feb. 1; and 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Community School of Davidson High School ArtSpace, 404 Armour St., Davidson.

James and the Giant Peach
• Description: A magical peach! Gigantic insect friends! An incredible journey! What more could an imprisoned boy ask for?  The classic story of James' fantastical journey of escape from his loathsome aunts comes hilariously to life in a 'larger than life' production.

• Showtimes: 1 and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, March 29-April 6, as well as 7 p.m. April 4, at Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St., Davidson.

Seussical Jr.
• Description: Follow the Cat in the Hat and Jojo on a whirlwind adventure. Dr. Seuss characters will come to life and delight audiences with their fun-filled adventures, discovering life lessons in loyalty and the importance of family and friendship.
