James Edward Cannon Sr.

HUNTERSVILLE – James Edward Cannon Sr., 76, died Dec. 25, 2013.

He was born March 22, 1937, in Hickory, to Bernard Council Cannon Sr. and Lucy Edmiston Cannon.

Cannon was a U.S. Air Force veteran and worked in the hospitality industry. Cannon developed the hospitality education program at Central Piedmont Community College and was instrumental in organizing the Charlotte hotel and restaurant community into what is now the Greater Charlotte Hospitality and Tourism Alliance. Subsequent to his retirement from CPCC, he served as general manager of America Charters Motorcoach Company.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughter, Suzanne and husband, Ted Davis; son, Jim Cannon Jr. and wife, Holly; sisters-in-law, Marsha and Bill McElroy and Debbie and Wayne Mullis; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 30 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

Betty Black Byrd

HUNTERSVILLE – Betty Black Byrd, 89, died Dec. 22, 2013, at Aldersgate Retirement Community.

She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Wake Forest, to the late Charles Spurgeon Black and Inez Keith Black.

Byrd worked for H&R Block for 35 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Walter Byrd.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Allison and husband, Al; sons, Tom Byrd and wife, Maria and Andy Byrd and wife, Reet; brother, Robert Black; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Dec. 29 at Aldersgate Retirement Community.

James Roy Nance

HUNTERSVILLE – James Roy Nance, 87, died Dec. 22, 2013.

He was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Stanfield, to the late Crawford Miller Nance and Nezzie Long Nance.

Nance retired as a manager with General Tire and Rubber Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zora Parsons Nance; brothers, Gad, Joe, Gene and Earl Nance; and sister, Mildred Nance Goodman.

Survivors included his daughter, Renee Nance Jones and husband, William of Huntersville; brothers, Bruce and wife, Lula, and Charlie and Jackie Nance; sister, Marie Nance Hinson; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home.

Robert Dennis Groce

DAVIDSON – Robert Dennis Groce, 64, died Dec. 21, 2013.

He was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Mecklenburg County, to Lucille Christine Groce and the late Richard Eugene Groce.

Groce was a U.S. Army veteran and worked in sales and service for Delta Scale Incorporated for more than 30 years.

Survivors include mother, Lucille Groce; wife, Janet Misenheimer Groce; daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Willett and husband, Derek Willett; sister, Bird Colonel Kathy Groce; brothers, Ricky Groce of Cornelius, David Groce of Hunterville and Scott Groce; and one granddaughter.

Dorothy Honeycutt Brown 

HUNTERSVILLE – Dorothy “Dot” Honeycutt Brown, 89, died Dec. 18, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

She was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Iredell County, to the late Andrew Jessie and Della Freeze Honeycutt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Vernon Brown; son, David Vernon Brown; and sister, Kathleen Seibert.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Roberts and husband, Tom, of Huntersville; brothers, Gene Honeycutt and wife, Phyllis, and Pete Honeycutt and wife, Barbara; sister, Margaret Neel; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Dixon Sherrill Washam

CORNELIUS – Dorothy Dixon Sherrill Washam, 92, died Dec. 18, 2013, at Summit Place.

She was born June 13, 1921, in Rutherford County, to the late Mary Edna Daniel Dixon and Alvin Mills Dixon.

Washam retired as supervisor of Davidson College Student Health Center after more than 40 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edgar Johnston Sherrill and Frank B. Washam.

Survivors include her son, Bryan Nixon Sherrill and wife, Vicki, of Cornelius; daughter, LaNell Sherrill Forrest; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
