CSD basketball coach passes away
DAVIDSON - Community School of Davidson boys’ basketball coach Tony Brown, in his first season, died unexpectedly at his home Jan. 27. Brown also was a coach for the Charlotte Storm, an AAU basketball club. The Storm’s website posted a brief memorial for Brown.
“Tony was a great friend and supporter of so many people,” the statement read. “Words can not express our loss. We hope to continue his work and passion for people. Our prayers are with his family, dear wife Melody and sons Richard and Robert.”
Brown previously was a junior varsity coach and varsity assistant at Davidson Day.
Davidson wins conference game easily
DAVIDSON – De’Mon Brooks and Brian Sullivan scored 21 points each to lead five Davidson College scorers in double figures as the Wildcats cruised past Georgia Southern, 82-52, in Southern Conference men’s basketball Jan. 25 at Belk Arena.
Brooks went 10-for-10 at the free-throw line, while Sullivan sank four 3-pointers.
Davidson (10-11, 6-1 conference) also got 11 points each from Tom Droney and Jake Belford, while Tyler Kalinoski scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 50.9 percent, made 10-of-22 3-pointers and finished at 94.1 percent (16 of 17) from the foul line. Davidson held the Eagles to 33.3 percent shooting. The Wildcats have won 19 of their past 20 conference games. Davidson will continue its longest homestand (three games) of the season with a 7 p.m. game against conference leader Chattanooga on Jan. 30.
Register for men’s basketball league
CORNELIUS - Cornelius and Huntersville parks and recreation departments are offering a men’s basketball league for players 18 and older. Registration is open through Feb. 24. Games will be Tuesday nights in March and April at Bailey Middle School, 11900 Bailey Road.
Register in person at the Cornelius PARC (21445 Catawba Ave., Cornelius) or at the Huntersville Parks and Recreation (105 Gilead Road). Cost is $400 per team, with an additional $10 to all non-resident participants. Registration is limited to the first eight teams and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Register for Valentine’s couples run
DENVER - The East Lincoln High cross country team and Cowans Ford Country Club are hosting their fifth annual Valentine's 5K & Couples’ 5K Run/Walk on Feb. 15, which will include a 1-mile fun run.
The 5K races begin at 9:30 a.m. and the fun run at 10 a.m., both at Cowan’s Ford Country Club. If you register before Feb. 1, it costs $20 for singles, $35 for couples and $10 for the fun run. To register, go to www.denvernc.com/valentine5k.
