DAVIDSON — Hands Around Mecklenburg/Mooresville Making Emergency Repairs Safely (HAMMERS), a collaboration of Davidson Housing Coalition and Davidson College, seeks Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville residents with immediate safety concerns at their home that they’d like repaired.
Priorities for receiving help are low-income residents and people with special needs such as elderly, disabled, single parents or households with five or more inhabitants. Applicants must prove their income, as well as ownership and residency of the building.
Projects must show an emergency or safety concern such as accessibility, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing or furnace/AC functions and must not exceed $5,000.
Thanks to a recent grant, approved projects in Mecklenburg County will get the work free of charge. All other projects require a small low-interest monthly fee to pay for project materials.
HAMMERS also seeks volunteers, older than 18 with their own transportation, willing to help do repairs. Anyone can join, but contractors or people with experience in electrical, roofing, dry wall or other repair work are encouraged.
