CORNELIUS – Lake Norman hosts its first World Paddle Association-sanctioned race May 9-10 at Port City Club.

Visit Lake Norman and My Aloha Paddle and Surf are organizing the Stand Up for the Catawba Lake Norman SUP Race.

“After three years of promoting paddleboarding and introducing so many of our residents to the sport, it is so exciting to host a WPA race here in Lake Norman,” said Rob Bennett, owner of My Aloha Paddle and Surf.

The event kicks off Friday with a meet and greet at 6-9 p.m. to benefit the Surfrider Foundation.

Races start after a pre-race meeting at 8 a.m. Saturday. The awards ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a North Carolina-style luau featuring the Island Hula Girls.

The event will include limited paddleboard rentals and fitness demonstrations.

“We are confident our race will eventually become one of the premier sanctioned paddleboard races in the Southeast,” said Travis Dancy, sales director with Visit Lake Norman.
