CSD’s Ellington becomes a triple track state champion, breaks record

DAVIDSON – For the second straight spring, Community School of Davidson distance runner Malia Ellington dominated the N.C. 1A track championship meet.

Ellington, a junior, repeated as champion in three events – the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs May 9 at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.

Ellington broke her own N.C. 1A record in the 1,600 with a time of four minutes, 59.88 seconds and beat the field by about 23 seconds. She won the 800 in 2:15.87 and the 3,200 in 12:02.69 to cap a busy, productive day.


Hough’s Cover wins state individual golf championship

SANFORD – Hough High senior Patrick Cover birdied the first playoff hole to win to individual honors in the 79th annual N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys’ golf championships May 13 at Carolina Trace Country Club.
Cover had a 68 in the first round May 12 and a par 72 in the final round for a 140 total score. Raleigh Millbrook’s Stephen Franken climbed into a tie with Cover after 36 holes with a 68 in the second round, which forced the playoff.

 Raleigh Broughton (team score of 592) captured the team title by eight shots over defending champ Southern Pines Pinecrest. Hough and Myers Park were tied for third at 609.


Pine Lake Prep tennis advances to semifinals

MOORESVILLE – The Pine Lake Prep boys’ tennis team advanced to the N.C. 1A semifinal with a 5-2 victory against Gray Stone Day on May 13.

The Pride (12-0) ended Gray Stone Day’s 17-match winning streak and will host Raleigh Bishop McGuinness at 4 p.m. May 15 at Cornelius Road Park.

Pine Lake’s squad, coached by Paul Ebenhoeh, is freshmen Daniel Crossin, Alex Wrench and Blake Jansen, sophomores Brian Forte and Sheppard Fowler and junior Parker Simpson.

The Pride took a 4-2 lead into the doubles portion of the match against Gray Stone Day and clinched the victory when Crossin and Wrench combined to beat two seniors, 10-6.


SouthLake’s Henry is state runner-up

HUNTERSVILLE – SouthLake Christian Academy’s Jon Henry finished second in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1A championship tournament at Bryan Park in Greensboro on May 12-13.

His two-round score of 138 was one stroke behind state champion Aaron Walker of Charlotte Christian.


Fuller is an all-state golfer

DAVIDSON – Davidson Day golfer Kyle Fuller had rounds of 71 and 74 to finish tied for seventh place at the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A championship tournament May 12-13 at Tallamore Golf Club in Pinehurst.

Fuller, a senior, was named to the all-state team and is headed to the Air Force Academy next fall.


CFL team to hold tryouts

MOORESVILLE – The Montreal Alouettes, a Canadian Football League team, will hold open tryouts May 24 at Joe Popp Stadium.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and testing begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $100, cash only. Players must bring all their practice equipment (shoes, shorts, gloves, tape, etc.).

SouthLake athletes named all-conference

HUNTERSVILLE – Several SouthLake Christian Academy athletes were named to All-Metrolina Athletic Conference teams in their respective sports:

• Softball - Brooke Bagwell;
• Baseball - Devin Bagwell, Bradley Hallman and Riley Zayicek;
• Golf - Jon Henry, Ethan Sawyers and William Crook; and
• Track and field - Victoria Ballard, Cayla Brown, Avery Bolen, David Bussell, Daniel Ntim, Judson Reel, Jaren Law, Asia Washington, Aapri Washington, Janay Sanders and Brett Carter.
