Spartans soccer extends its unbeaten season

DAVIDSON – The Community School of Davidson girls’ soccer team crushed Queens Grant 7-0 in the second round of the N.C. 1A playoffs May 17. The Spartans improved to 15-0 and were set to play Avery County on May 21 (after The Herald Weekly deadlines).

Eliza Robinson led CSD with three goals and two assists. The Spartans scored five goals in the first half.


Pine Lake Prep beats CSD in baseball playoffs

HUNTERSVILLE – Pine Lake Prep banged out 15 hits and scored in five straight innings to beat Community School of Davidson 13-7 in the second round of the N.C. 1A baseball playoffs May 17. The Pride’s top hitters were Alex Cohen (three hits, two RBIs), Casey Scholl (two hits, three RBIs), William Harwood, Shane Connolly, Jakob Peace and Taylor Hochman (two hits each).

Pine Lake, a playoff wildcard, was eliminated in a 17-3 loss at Cherryville in the third round May 20. The Pride finished 6-13-1.


Titan will play college volleyball

HUNTERSVILLE – Hopewell High volleyball player Anyla Kryeziu, a senior, signed with Montreat College. Kryeziu, an outside hitter, had 322 kills, 95 digs, 92 aces and 57 blocks last season, helping the Titans to a 22-7 record.

“We're very excited to add Anyla to our team,” said Montreat coach Kristy Kamer. “She's a physical outside hitter that will bring a well-rounded game to the Cavaliers."
 Kryeziu also has played seven years of club volleyball with R.V. Prishtina (2008-12), Race City Intimidators (2012-13), and NCVB Elite (2013-14).  A former Kosovo Junior National Team member, Kryeziu led the national team to a fourth-place finish in the 2012 European Tournament.

North Meck boosters to hold benefit golf tournament

HUNTERSVILLE – Registration is open for the North Mecklenburg High School Booster Club’s 22nd Annual Golf Tournament. It will be at 1 p.m. June 12 at Cowans Ford Country Club. It’s the largest fundraiser for the Vikings’ athletic program. North Meck teams will be on hand grilling food that will be the golfers’ post-round dinner.

Davidson baseball program earns all-conference honors

DAVIDSON – A school-record six Davidson College Wildcats were named to the All-Southern Conference baseball teams, highlighted by senior Forrest Brandt earning co-player of the year honors from the league’s coaches and Dick Cooke being named the consensus league coach of the year.

Brandt and designated hitter Ryan Lowe were consensus first-team picks. Outfielder Lee Miller was tabbed for the first team by the league’s coaches and the second team by the league’s media. Third baseman David Daniels was also voted to the first team by the league’s media. Starting pitcher Danny Mooney was named to the second team by both voting groups and outfielder Nathan Becker earned second-team recognition from the league’s coaches.
