HUNTERSVILLE — Huntersville Police Officer Steve Lehew biked 500 miles from Charlotte to D.C. in four days with 75 officers, representing 21 departments and six states from May 8 to 12.
The annual Law Enforcement Bicycle Ride to D.C. during National Police Week began May 2007 after Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Seeing people cheering and applauding while hanging over balconies, from windows of their vehicles and standing on street corners with their waving children holding signs supporting our cause as we passed through the finish, brought the whole experience together,” Lehew said.
He said the ride offered a chance to physically give back to the officers who have given so much to protect and serve as well as their families.
“I wanted to make sure I gave it my all as those brave men and women have done," Lehew said. "It has been an honor to say that I rode for the Thin Blue Line."
