Davidson restructures track program

DAVIDSON – Davidson College reshaped its cross country and track programs July 3, naming longtime women’s coach Jen Straub the director of men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, and adding Renny Waldron as the associate head coach of men’s cross country and track and field.

Straub will oversee cross country and track and field programs. She will continue coaching the women’s cross country, distance and middle distance runners.

Waldron will oversee the men’s program, while focusing on the cross country, distance and middle distance runners. Rory Carpenter, who has been an assistant men’s track and field coach the past two seasons, will now work with both the men’s and women’s track and field athletes. Davidson will add one more track and field assistant coach in August.

Waldron worked as a volunteer assistant at Harvard during 2013, guiding a Crimson distance runner to the NCAA Final Round for the first time since 1997.


Davidson adds football assistant

DAVIDSON – Davidson College’s football program added Anthony Antonacci as the defensive line coach July 2.

He spent the past two seasons at Illinois, coaching outside linebackers in 2013 and the Illini’s recruiting/operations graduate assistant in 2012.

Antonacci played as a defensive lineman and running back at Northern Illinois. 


Wildcats add tennis assistant

DAVIDSON – The Davidson College men’s tennis team added Alexander Kasarov as an assistant coach July 1.

Kasarov, a four-year letter winner at Wisconsin (2001-05), recently was a volunteer coach for the Northwestern women's tennis team.

Prior to Northwestern, Kasarov was a private tennis coach in Illinois and worked with nationally ranked junior players.


Register for youth football combine

DAVIDSON – Registration is open for the Lake Norman Youth Football Combine, which will be July 21-24 at Davidson Day School. The combine is open to all rising third through ninth-graders and will be 6-8:30 p.m. daily.

Register for adult softball

CORNELIUS – Registration for the Town of Cornelius Adult Fall Softball Leagues will begin July 21 for returning teams and July 28 for new teams.

The Cornelius PARC Department will offer softball in two divisions: Men's “C” and Co-Ed. Registration will close Aug. 8.

Registration costs $499 per team, plus $10 per non-resident.

Clinic to teach water skiing

MOORESVILLE – The Lake Norman Ski Club on July 26 will host a Learn2Ski event designed to teach students safety while learning how to ski or wakeboard.

The event will be held 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Eddie's Seafood, 643 Williamson Road.
