Lake Norman Charter outscored Shelby by 11 points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 78-74 win in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A championships. Sophomore Grayson Hickert paced the Knights with 17 points and six rebounds, leading five players in double figures including Barrett Hancock (15 points),Malik McCormick (14), Nick Worthy (11) and Troy Cracknell (10). HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Charter boys’ basketball team routed North Gaston 75-39 on Jan. 20 to maintain its lead in the Big South 2A/3A conference. The Knights pumped in 31 points in the second quarter to build a 41-16 halftime lead. Lake Norman Charter improved to 7-0 in the conference and 11-4 overall. Surprising Spartans spin shutout - Community School of Davidson win its third straight game for the first time in school history with a 20-0 victory at Lake Norman Charter on Sept. 5. The Spartans improved to 3-0, after winning four games last season. It also was their first shutout this season. Lake Norman Charter slipped to 1-2.
The basketball season came to a shocking end for the Lake Norman Charter girls’ team. The Knights, top seeded among 32 teams in the N.C. 1A Western region, was upset 55-53 by Lexington (a No. 17 seed) in a second-round playoff game Feb. 26 in Huntersville. Lake Norman Charter brought an abrupt end to Lincoln Charter’s 14-game winning streak. The Knights beat the host Eagles 56-23 in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Jan. 22, in a match of two of the lake area’s top teams. Lake Norman Charter improved to 15-1 and Lincoln Charter fell to 14-1. Lake Norman Charter jumped to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and extended it to 26-6 by halftime. The Lake Norman Charter girls’ basketball team beat Hough 59-50 in a Dec. 6 non-conference game in Huntersville. The Knights improved to 3-1 by outscoring Hough 18-0 in the second quarter. Alex Busch scored a game-high 22 points, Ezinne Mbamalu had nine points and 17 rebounds and Jessi Harris grabbed 12 rebounds. Hough earned a split by coasting to a 55-29 victory in the boys’ game. The Huskies (4-1) did most of their damage inside as forward Luke Maye had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and center Tucker Thompson scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds.
